I sincerely hope you have enjoyed and benefited from the Winnerís Way notes. God led me to do these notes to bless you, encourage you and to give you something to help you to continue win in life through Jesus Christ. I want to help you build your team, so you can fulfill your dream. Please email me your prayer requests, thoughts and victories. I, as the Word says, want to rejoice with you, laugh with you, cry and weep and stand with you to see victory.
Let me share with you now a little story I read recently in Kent and Barbara Huges book, "Liberating Ministry from the Success Syndrome".
Success is Prayer
Some years ago a young man approached the foreman of a logging crew and asked for a job. "That depends", replied the foreman. "Letís see you fell this tree." The young man stepped forward and skillfully felled a great tree. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, "Start Monday!"
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday rolled by, and Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the young man and said, "You can pick up your paycheck on the way out today".
Startled, he replied, "I thought you paid on Friday". "Normally we do", answered the foreman, "but weíre letting you go today because youíve fallen behind". "Our daily felling charts show that youíve dropped from first place on Monday to last on Wednesday."
"But Iím a hard worker", the young man objected. "I arrive first, leave last, and even have worked through my coffee breaks!"
The foreman, sensing the boyís integrity, thought for a minute and then asked, "Have you been sharpening your ax?"
The young man replied, "Iíve been working too hard to take the time."
What an obvious mistake! How could anyone make such an unthinking error? Yet the fact is that many of Godís servants fail in their appointed tasks because they do not take time to sharpen their lives in prayer.
Indeed, when Godís servants candidly talk about their spiritual lives, a majority express guilt over their prayerlessness. This means that thousands are hacking away at their ministries with increasingly dull instruments that inevitably frustrate any possible success.
We Must Pray
As Godís under-shepherds we must keep our lives ever sharp through prayer. John Bunyan once said: "You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed." Prayer is fundamental to success in the ministry.
First, we must pray because of what prayer, does to us. Someone once asked George MacDonald, "Why if God loves us so much and knows everything we need before we ask, must we pray?" MacDonaldís magnificent answer remains wonderfully instructive:
What if He knows prayers to be the thing we need first and most? What if the main object in Godís idea of prayer be the supplying of our great, our endless need Ė the need of Himself? What if the good of all our smaller and lower needs lies in this, that they help drive us to God?
Communion with God is the one need of the soul beyond all other needs; prayer is the beginning of that communion.
Certainly, George MacDonald is right! We have an endless need of Him and prayer supplies it.
Think of it this way: our lives are like photographic plates, and prayer is like a time exposure to God. As we expose ourselves to God for a half hour, a hour, perhaps two hours a day, His image is imprinted more and more upon us. More and more we absorb the image of His character, His love, His wisdom, His way of dealing with life and people. As servants of Christ, that is what we need and that is what we receive from Him.
Along with this, Godís will is not bent to ours but ours to His. As E. Stanley Jones says:
Prayer is surrender Ė surrender to the will of God and cooperation with that will. If I throw out a boathook from the boat and catch hold of the shore and pull, do I pull the shore to me, or do I pull myself to the shore? Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God.
Aligned with Godís will, our whole person is elevated. Thus great things become possible in our character and actions.
Mosesí experience on Mt. Sinai is the quintessential example of the benefits of such prayer. As Moses meditated those forty days on Sinai, he was so exposed to God that his face became radiant (Exodus 34:29:35), and his will so bent to Godís that he became the giver of the Ten Commandments. As he went on to lead Israel, he did so in the wisdom and way of God.
That is what we all need. It comes through spending time with God in prayer. Are we spending enough time for His life to be burnt into ours and our will aligned with His? We owe it to Him, to ourselves, and to the church.
I dare you to pray. I dare you to rise up every morning for the next week, worship God and say, "Today Father in the name of Jesus, not my will but, Yours be done". Today I dare you to align your will in prayer to the WILL OF GOD. Ask God to change you into whom He has destined you to be.
I dare you to succeed in prayer: excel in prayer this week.
I have just completed a number of teachings on prayer, which are now available on CD or tape. I dare you to get a copy of them, listen to them and commit to be a prayer warrior. (To obtain a copy of these messages please contact or write to the below address.)
